I Am a Child of God

Rebecca

I think sometimes we forget who we are. Because of different circumstances, such as being childless, we believe that we are less than we actually are. Do you remember making paper snowflakes when you were a child? We would take a piece of paper and fold it several times and then cut out little bits of the paper. Afterward, we would unfold the paper and admire the uniqueness of the snowflake. It is a simple lesson but one that is sometimes forgotten. Each of these snowflakes is different from the rest – but that doesn’t mean that they don’t fit in with one another or that they are worth any less than the other snowflakes!

Paper snowflakes

At times we may feel that we don’t measure up or that we have been singled out for a particular trial. Satan encourages these thoughts. We should never forget that we are all children of God. As it says in Psalms 82:6 ‘…all of you are children of the most High.’

I Am a Child of God

As we are all children of God, so He loves all of us. ‘Never forget, my dear young friends, that you really are a child of God who has inherited something of His divine nature, one whom He loves and desires to help and bless.’ (May 2003 Friend ‘Come Listen to a Prophet’s Voice: You Are a Child of God’ by President Gordon B. Hinckley)

His love for us is not conditional on who we are or how much we have accomplished.

‘Relief Society is made up of a variety of women. There are those of you who are single—perhaps in school, perhaps working—yet forging a full and rich life. Some of you are busy mothers of growing children. Still others of you have lost your husbands because of divorce or death and are struggling to raise your children without the help of a husband and father. Some of you have raised your children but have realized that their need for your help is ongoing. There are many of you who have aging parents who require the loving care only you can give.
Wherever we are in life, there are times when all of us have challenges and struggles. Although they are different for each, they are common to all.
My dear sisters, your Heavenly Father loves you—each of you. That love never changes. It is not influenced by your appearance, by your possessions, or by the amount of money you have in your bank account. It is not changed by your talents and abilities. It is simply there. It is there for you when you are sad or happy, discouraged or hopeful. God’s love is there for you whether or not you feel you deserve love. It is simply always there.’ (November 2013 Ensign ‘We Never Walk Alone’ by President Thomas S. Monson)

What can we do if we do not feel like we are children of God?

We can remind ourselves often that we ARE children of God. ‘Heavenly Father loves you and wants you to be happy. Always remember that everyone is a child of God—no matter what!’ (January 2009 Friend). This is also helpful if we are struggling to view another as a fellow child of God.

We can also do the ‘Sunday School answers’ to feel that we are Children of God. ‘We are the offspring of God (Acts 17:29). I testify that each of us is a beloved child of Heavenly Father. He loves us with all of His heart. Take time to read about Him, pray to Him, and attend church to worship Him. I know that He will give you that feeling of warmth and love in your heart. Then you can know that you are a child of God, your life has a purpose, and everything will be all right.’ (January 2008 Friend ‘You Are a Child of God’ by Paul B. Pieper of the First Quorum of the Seventy). The ‘Sunday School answers’ are simple answers but by going to church, reading the scriptures, praying, and so on, we can be blessed with the confirmation that we are Children of God – not to mention there are other blessings we can receive by being faithful.

Lead Me Guide Me Walk Beside Me I Am a Child of God

At the October 2011 General Conference President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Second Counselor in the First Presidency, gave his memorable talk on the Forget-Me-Not. This talk is wonderful and can be read in its entirety here. I’m going to share just a small piece of it here: ‘You are not forgotten. No matter how insignificant you may feel, your Heavenly Father has not forgotten you. He loves you with an infinite love. He who created and knows the stars knows you and your name. Never forget that your Heavenly Father knows, loves, and cherishes you.’

Thank you for the reminder. I really appreciate it after the challenging holidays. Yes, sometimes, especially when our circumstances are quite different, we may fall into feeling like we aren’t enough or that we aren’t loved by our Heavenly Father. That is Satan’s trap that drags us down to misery. With wonderful reminders like the one you just wrote, we can make a choice to not believe in the untrue thoughts, and we can choose to focus on the truth-that our Heavenly Father does love us…we are unique…we can have a happy and a fulfilling life. Wishing you well in the upcoming year!
